Comparative study of hot air drying and microwave drying for dewatered sludge

چکیده

The seafood processing industries produce large amounts of wastewater sludge in Thailand. Most is dewatered and then sent directly to landfills without utilization nor resource recovery. dried sludge, having a gross calorific value (GCV) higher than 21.9 MJ/kg, might be worthwhile utilize as refuse-derived fuel. However, the critical obstacle its high moisture content 87.4 wt%. This study investigated two techniques for drying sludge: hot air microwave drying. effects temperatures (100 °C–170 °C) power levels (100–800 W) were studied their specific energy consumption (SEC), product characteristics, kinetics. results showed that times decreased with increase power. Under tested conditions this study, application microwaves reduced time by at least 37.5% compared using air. reduction led consumption. Approximately 72.5–80.3 wt% was volatile matter (VM). As component devolatilized, GCV decreased. had 20.8–21.4 while 19.4–21.8 MJ/kg. from analysis suggested technique could an alternative method when one requires shorter conventional technique.

A pilot-scale microwave technology for sludge sanitization and drying

Large volumes of sludge are produced from onsite sanitation systems in densely populated areas (e.g. slums and emergency settlements) and wastewater treatment facilities that contain high amounts of pathogens. There is a need for technological options which can effectively treat the rapidly accumulating sludge under these conditions. This study explored a pilot-scale microwave (MW) based reacto...

Comparison of Drying Characteristic and Biodegradability of Dairy Sludge Using Microwave and Infrared Drying

In our work we focused on the investigation of two intensive drying methods, i.e. infrared (IR) and microwave (MW) drying, for dairy sludge. During the experiments the effects of IR and MW drying with different power intensities on drying characteristic and biodegradability were examined. Our results has revealed that MW drying was more advantageous for dairy sludge, because the drying time nee...

Comparative study of three drying methods: freeze, hot air- assisted freeze and infrared-assisted freeze modes

The dehydration tests were conducted at three drying methods to evaluate the drying curves and the energy uptake. Apple (Malus domestica L.) cubes were dried under different processing conditions applying freeze drying (FD), freeze drying assisted by hot air and freeze drying assisted by infrared radiation. Control samples were produced using regular freeze drying without the pre-drying. Hot ai...

Drying kinetics and mathematical modeling of hot air drying of coconut coir pith

Drying kinetics of coir pith was studied and the properties of compressed coir pith discs were analyzed. Coir pith particles were oven dried in the range of temperatures from 100 to 240 °C and the rehydration ability of compressed coir pith was evaluated by finding the volume expansion. The optimum drying temperature was found to be 140 °C. Hot air drying was carried out to examine the drying k...

Drying Energy Efficiency Through Partial Air-Drying: A Case Study

The green lumber products tend towards a state of equilibrium with the surrounding environment. The final target is the equilibrium moisture content (EMC). Whether is natural convection in the lumberyard or forced convection in the kiln drier, the road towards the final EMC consumes time and energy. The air drying operations (natural convection) are not an easy task for the drying management. T...
